Fly High for the Heart Health!

Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew is encouraging Mid and South Cantabrians to join her in supporting a major project to improve the heart health of all New Zealanders.

Mrs Goodhew has organised flights by the Southern DC3 from Ashburton and Timaru Airports on Sunday, March 21, with all profits going to the Heart Foundation’s Cardiovascular Research Fund.

The heart charity is seeking to raise a $5 million endowment fund for a new University of Auckland research hub that will focus on heart disease prevention. The new preventative heart health research would be specific to New Zealand’s needs.

Heart Foundation Medical Director, Professor Norman Sharpe says cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) will affect most New Zealanders at some point in their lives - with most Kiwis having already lost someone close because of it.

“Despite huge advancements in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease it remains the number one killer of both men and women, and an increased number of heart attacks are occurring in young adults,” says Professor Sharpe.

“We know that many cases of heart disease and stroke are premature and preventable, yet more research - that is relevant to a New Zealand context - is urgently needed if we are to have a shot at turning these frightening statistics around,” he says.

Professor Sharpe says the $5 million endowment fund will pay for new preventive heart research by establishing a University of Auckland based research hub for the benefit of all New Zealanders.

It will also support New Zealand’s emerging heart health professionals with scholarships and fellowships to ensure New Zealand maintains the best standards in heart research.

“On behalf of the cardiology community I would like to thank Jo Goodhew and her team for generously organising these DC3 flights to help raise funds for this important project,” says Professor Sharpe.

Thirty minute aerial tours of Mid Canterbury or South Canterbury in the DC3 will cost $100 per person. It is anticipated either one or two flights will be made from Ashburton Airport during the morning and two from Timaru Airport during the afternoon.

Bookings can be made by contacting 03 3087510 (Ashburton) or 03 683 1386 (Timaru)
